Applications are invited for Fully Funded Australian Government Research Training Program scholarships at the participating universities in Australia.

Details

The Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships are provided by the Australian government to support both domestic and international students undertaking postgraduate research degrees (Masters and PhD). 

The RTP provides block grants, on a calendar year basis, to HEPs to support both domestic and overseas students undertaking Research Doctorate and Research Masters degrees, known as higher degrees by research (HDRs).

The objectives of the RTP scheme are to:

  • provide flexible funding arrangements to support the training of domestic students and overseas students undertaking HDRs at Australian HEPs
  • deliver graduates with the skills required to build careers in academia and other sectors of the labour market
  • support collaboration between HEPs and industry and other research end-users
  • support overseas students undertaking HDR studies at Australian HEPs.

Benefits

The Research Training Program scholarships are valued at $35,000 per annum. The RTP International Scholarship assists with OSHC, tuition fees and living costs.

  • A student who relocates from countries outside Australia to take up the Scholarship may claim a relocation allowance. The value of the allowance is up to $1,250 travel from their home country to Sydney at the commencement of studies and up to $1,250 for travel to return to their home country after successful completion of studies
  • Reimbursement of up to $420 for Masters candidates and up to $840 for Doctoral candidates will be made for eligible claims for direct costs of producing a thesis in accordance with the University’s thesis allowance claim information
  • Reimbursement of Visa application fee

Eligibility

To be eligible for Research Training Program scholarships, applicants must:

  • be a commencing or enrolled international postgraduate research student
  • have an outstanding record of academic achievement and research potential
  • have an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled in a master’s by research or PhD at the University of Sydney

Applicants who are undertaking their first PhD degree will be the first priority to be considered for Research Training Program Scholarships.

Application

Applicants can apply for Research Training Program scholarships at any time of the year, as scholarships are awarded all year round.

To be considered for a scholarship, applicant must:

  1. complete your application for admission in postgraduate research to the relevant faculty, and select the checkbox to be considered for research scholarships
  2. ensure your application includes all relevant supporting documents, referring to the RTP/UPA applicant information pack and research experience guide and evidence template

Universities are responsible for the application and selection processes for RTP Scholarships, so prospective applicants will need to contact their chosen university’s postgraduate research office directly to discuss how to apply. The list of eligible universities is available in Table A and B of the Higher Education Support Act 2003.
