The PhD specialisation in Business and Management Science will provide students with a thorough understanding of science-based tools used to inform and improve economic decisions. The department prioritises inter-disciplinary research within the following fields:

  • Incentives, contracts and firm behaviour
  • Investment, insurance and household finance
  • Business taxation
  • Energy markets, resource management and sustainability
  • Shipping, logistics and operations management
  • Data science and analytics

The PhD scholars will be included in a highly stimulating and rewarding research environment, working closely with faculty members and other PhD research scholars at the department. The applicants receive feedback on their work through regular interaction with their supervisor and other faculty members during seminars. PhD research scholars are expected to participate actively in faculty and research seminars, as well as in workshops. The place of work will be at NHH in Bergen where the applicants will receive their own office space in their department.


Successful applicants will receive the following benefits:

  • annual salary for the PhD Research Scholar position is NOK 479 000 (equivalent to approximately EUR 49 220 or USD 55 490)
  • public health care benefits and pension savings


To be eligible for Scholarships positions, an applicant must:

  • Master of Science (MSc) or comparable degree relevant in Economics and Business Administration, Social Sciences, Psychology, Philosophy, Mathematics, Engineering, Industry, Management, Law
  • Applicants must normally have completed a 5-year master’s degree program or equivalent
  • Minimum B (4) in Grade Point Average (GPA), five-point scale (A=five, B=four, C=three, D=two, E=one)
  • Minimum B (4) on your master thesis
  • Excellent English language proficiency (spoken and written)

The Department of Business and Management Science does not require GMAT/GRE or TOEFL/IELTS tests to apply, but this will strengthen the application
