The University of Otago International Master’s Research Scholarships provides funding to support international Master’s students studying at the University of Otago.
Applicants must be:
- obtaining their first Master’s qualification
- international students
- undertaking a thesis-based Master’s
Selection is based predominantly on academic merit and the applicant’s potential for research.
Benefits
Successful applicants will receive the following benefits:
- NZ$15,000 stipend per annum plus a tuition fee waiver for 1 year capped at the domestic rate for Master’s study (excludes student services fee and insurance)
There are eight University of Otago International Master’s Research Scholarships available per year– two per teaching Division. Due to the limited number of these scholarships, applicants require very good grades to be successful. We only recommend applying if your grades in the later years of your degree are at A or A+ level.
Please note this Scholarship will only provide support for the thesis component of a Master’s Research degree for up to 1 year full-time enrolment. It also only partially covers the cost of your tuition fees. As an international student you will be charged a higher level of tuition fees than a New Zealand domestic student. The Scholarship covers tuition fees for your thesis only at the domestic fee rate, i.e. the cost a New Zealand student would pay for their fees. This will be significantly less than the overall cost of your tuition fees and you will need to pay the difference between the two rates yourself. Please check with our International Office for tuition fee rates.
International Master’s Research Scholarships are currently available in each Division for candidates planning to start within the time frames specified below. Note that these dates can change based on submission or withdrawal of current candidates. Please check back often.
Application
Applications for University of Otago International Master’s Research Scholarships are made online through the University’s website. An invitation to apply for scholarships is sent once an application for admission to the relevant qualification is complete. Applications may be made at any time and should normally accompany the application for admission to the relevant qualification. Where an applicant is completing a Master’s degree which includes enrolment in papers prior to enrolment in a thesis, application should normally be made following completion of those papers. An invitation will be sent when enrolment in the thesis component of the Master’s degree is completed.
