The Astrophysics Group at UCL is heavily involved in cosmological and extragalactic research, which ranges across observational, theoretical and computational topics. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who will work on computational simulations of galaxy formation. The post-holder will be based in the Cosmoparticle Hub in the Kathleen Lonsdale Building.
The post-holder will perform original research in the area of computational galaxy and structure formation. They will contribute to the design, execution and analysis of cosmological simulations, including comparisons to observations and/or galactic dynamical models. The research will form part of the GM Galaxies project (see www.gmgalaxies.org), requiring the post-holder to work closely with Andrew Pontzen, the broader UCL team and international collaborators.
The start date is nominally 1 October 2021, although an earlier start may be possible. The post is funded by the ERC for 3 years in the first instance.
In the event of no-deal Brexit, the UK Government is committed to underwriting this funding.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (Salary £31,542 – £33,257 per annum, including London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis (including corrections).
The successful candidate for Research Fellow in Cosmological Galaxy Formation will have recently completed a PhD in Galaxy Formation, Cosmology or a related field. They will have a track record of publication in astronomical or physics journals and preferably experience of communicating their research at national and international conferences. Experience of using high performance computing for performing and/or analyzing simulations of galaxy formation would be advantageous.
Candidates will need to upload a CV (including a list of publications), a statement of research interests and plans (3 pages maximum), and the contact information for three references. Please arrange also for these three academic references to be sent to Andrew Pontzen (email@example.com) by the closing date. A cover letter can be included using the “Statement in Support of your Application” section of the online form.
